Singapore vs Yemen
Singapore will face Yemen in the opening match of the Group D World Cup qualifiers in the Asian region. They aim for three points in this fight because it acts as the host. Clash opened Thursday (5/09) at the National Stadium.
Singapore has held four test matches since March with satisfying graphics, namely wins over Malaysia and Kep Solomon, drew with Oman, and lost to Myanmar. The outcome of facing Myanmar became the most highlighted party because they should be able to win against one of the weak national teams in Asean.
On the other hand, Yemen also closed its last test match with poor results, losing 1-0 to Oman. It was the only trial party that was undertaken after appearing in the West Asian Football Federation Championship competition where they lost to Palestine and Iraq, drew with Syria, then won over Lebanon.
This phase will be the first step for Singapore to realize their ambitions on the world stage. The Vice President of the Singapore Football Federation, Edwin Tong, revealed that his country was trying to appear at the 2034 World Cup where there would be 48 participants, 8 from Asia, while the 32 participant format would end at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Previously, Singapore also launched the same program when in 1998 they tried to become a participant in the 2010 World Cup. Unfortunately, these goals have not been fulfilled to this day.
In this group, they will face Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Palestine. Therefore, full points facing Yemen will be a crucial game to build the confidence of the players, especially if they appear as the host. In other words, they have to bury the bad results against Myanmar to get the perfect start.
